This file contains the first level of updates for the 2.9 release of the University of Victoria Earth System Climate Model (UVic_ESCM). Individual files may be accessed through the main UVic_ESCM link. Compressed, the file is approximately 84 kb. Uncompressed, the file is approximately 501 kb. After expansion the files will be placed in a UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01 directory. Twenty files are included in the 01 update level. These files will be used if the "Updates_Level" variable in the mk.in file (or the mk.ver file) is set to either "latest" (which is the default) or "01". To install these updates, copy the "UVic_ESCM.2.9.updates.01.tar.gz" file to the directory that contains the UVic_ESCM distribution directory and uncompress the files with: gunzip UVic_ESCM.2.9.updates.01.tar.gz tar -xvf UVic_ESCM.2.9.updates.01.tar File list: UVic_ESCM/ UVic_ESCM/2.9/ UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/ UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/ UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/ UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/mom/ UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/mom/diago.F UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/common/ UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/common/gasbc.F UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/common/cembm.h UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/common/global_sums.F UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/common/sed.h UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/common/file_names.F UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/common/gosbc.F UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/common/def_files.F UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/common/mtlm.h UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/mtlm/ UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/mtlm/mtlmio.F UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/mtlm/mtlm.F UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/embm/ UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/embm/embmio.F UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/embm/fluxes.F UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/embm/embm_rest.F UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/embm/embm_tsi.F UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/embm/setembm.F UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/sed/ UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/sed/sed_rest.F UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/sed/setsed.F UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/sed/sedio.F UVic_ESCM/2.9/updates/01/source/sed/sed_tsi.F Reasons for updates: cembm.h: A new diagnostic ouput variable "carbemit" and its average are defined. The variable"carbemit" tracks the total anthropogenic emissions from "initial" time when using the option O_save_carbon_totals. def_files: The definitions for the option O_global_sums file name and variable definitions were modified to be more consistent with other output. diago.F: An erroneous factor of 1000 has been removed from a component in the calculation of total ocean carbon. This only affected the diagnostic output O_totcarb (total ocean carbon) when using the option O_save_carbon_totals. embmio.F: The averaging of "carbemit" has been added and the call to embm_tsi_out has been modified. embm_rest.F: The variable "carbemit" has been added to the restart file. embm_tsi.F: The variable "carbemit" has been added to the time step integral output file. file_names.F: The default output file name for option O_global_sums variables has been changed to the standard time step integral file. fluxes.F: The method used to determine if precipitation is snow was modified. Snowfall is usually changed to rain when a certain level of snow thickness (usually 10 m) is reached (such as over ice sheets). Since there are two different models that can be used to track snow, both models snow thickness were originally added for this check but this did not allow for the correct transition between models. The snow thickness from the controlling model is now used. This bug may have resulted in a poor determination of snowfall over points that were ice sheets, if option O_landice_data_transient was on. It did not cause any conservation errors and did not affect the default configuration of the model. gasbc.F: Specified emissions are added to the diagnostic variable "carbemit". global_sums.F: Some redundant code has been eliminated and diagnostic emissions are added to the diagnostic output variable "carbemit", if using O_co2emit_diag. The code that defines O_global_sums variables has been modified, These changes do not affect the model. gosbc.F: The calculation of the burn flux for option O_mtlm_segtim has been changed, a calculation for "carblith" has been added when using O_save_carbon_totals and the check which zeroed any net negative weathering flux was removed. The zeroing of weathering was removed to ensure the weathering flux always equals the burial flux when using the option O_sed_weath_diag. This means a transient experiment can now potentially diagnose unphysical negative weathering, when there is net sediment dissolution. This "bug" did not cause any conservation errors but it did diagnose fluxes differently than expected. It did not affect the default configuration of the model or the appropriate use of the option, which was meant to be used only for equilibrium simulations. To zero any negative fluxes (as before) use the option O_sed_constrain_weath. mtlm.h: The variable "BURN" has been removed. This change does not affect the model. mtlm.F: The calculation of the burning flux has been modified. This was done to ensure conservation of carbon, when not using the default option O_mtlm_segday and a burn factor (BF) greater than zero. The bug resulted in the flux from burning vegetation flux not always being taken up by the atmosphere. The variable "BURN" has also been removed. The model now conserves carbon with and without the option for any burn factor. This bug did not affect the default configuration of the model. mtlmio.F: The averaging of the burning flux has been changed. This was needed after removing the BURN variable. These changes do not affect the model. sed.h: The variables "sedsa" (surface area of potential sediment), "carblith" and "tai_carblith" were added. "carblith" is the total change in "lithosphere" carbon since "initial" time when using the option O_save_carbon_totals. The output variable "tai_csed" was also removed. sedio.F: The averaging of "carblith" has been added, the call to sed_tsi_out has been modified and the calculation of the average burial flux (tai_cfo2s) was corrected. The area multiplying "tai_cfo2s" was changed from the total ocean bottom surface area to the area with potential deep sediments (sedsa). This bug only affected the diagnostic output "F_carbo2s" (flux of carbon from the ocean to the sediments) when using the option O_save_carbon_totals. sed_rest.F: The variable "carblith" has been added to the restart file. sed_tsi.F: The variable "carblith" has been added and "csed" has been removed from the time step integral output file. setembm.F: An initial value for the diagnostic variable "carbemit" was added. setsed.F: The calculation of "sedsa" (surface area of potential sediment) and an initial value for the diagnostic variable "carblith" were added.
